TANABATA Festival☆

Have you heard about TANABATA (七夕) before??

TANABATA is the star festival in Japan and Taiwan, China, Vietnam, etc...

Originally the festival which was a Chinese event(Qixi Festival) reached Japan.

tanabata1.jpg
Sendai TANABATA festival

The original TANABATA date was based on the Japanese lunisolar calendar.

Some festivals are held on July 7(yesterday!?),

some are held on a few days around August 7.

It celebrates the meeting of the deities ORIHIME and HIKOBOSHI.

(represented by the stars Vega and Altair respectively).

According to legend,

the Milky Way separates these lovers,

tanabata8.jpg

and they are allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day

of the seventh lunar month of the Lunar calendar.

The date of Tanabata varies by region of the country,

but the first celebration begin on July 7 of the Gregorian calendar.

The celebration is held at night.

In present-day Japan, people generally celebrate this day by writing wishes,

sometimes in the form of poetry, on TANZAKU (短冊), small pieces of paper,

and hanging them on bamboo, sometimes with other decorations.

I did it with my students while I was staying in Malaysia for teaching Japanese last year.

Can you guess what is their wishes??

DSC05580.JPG DSC05567.JPGDSC05562.JPG DSC05571.JPG

"Wish to get a good score on a test!"

"Wish to become a rich person!!"

How cute they are!!!

Even though you missed to celebrate it yesterday, you can do it on August 7!!

tanabata4.jpg

or visit Sendai for the TANABATA festival during August 6 to 8 (^-^)

SUNDAY MORNING

How did you spend your Sunday morning?
I like Sunday morning somehow ... maybe because it is peaceful and quiet.

This morning I stopped by Seven-Eleven to buy an ice cream and a song played in the store.
'Sunday morning rain is falling. Steal some covers share some skin ...'
sun100.jpg
That was " Sunday Morning " by Maroon 5.

sun3.jpg
Then, I went to FamilyMart to buy fried chicken and No Doubt's " Sunday Morning " was playing.

I got a funny feeling.

When I got home, I picked up the 2 albums and listened to the 2 songs over and over.

sun8.jpg sun7.jpg
Now, I am watching one of my favorite movies 'The Spanish Apartment'(L'Auberge Espagnole)

sun200.jpg
Tonight, I am planning to join "Travelers' Night Spain" at Sakura Cafe Ikebukuro.
Would you like to come and join us?

FIESTA vol.5

Our event “FIESTA vol 5” was held on 11th of June.
Over 70 persons joined and seemed to enjoy their evening :)

This is the pic on that night.
fiest6.jpg

Hey, can you see the person having a camera, is far left in the pic?
Do you know who he is??
He is.. yes, our staff, Hideki.
http://www.sakura-hotel-ikebukuro.com/staff.php
He was off duty on that night and joined the event.
He was also supposed to take pics of the guests though,
I noticed that he mostly enjoyed drinking and chatting with our guests.
Whenever I saw him, he seemed to enjoy having his time with girls!

You see?
fiest2.jpg

And see?
fiest3.jpg

Hey Hideki, instead of being taken, you took enough photos, didn't you?
And... you tried to find your future bride, didn't you? :D

BASEBALL TOUR

Last night we had a free baseball tour at Meiji-Jingu Stadium.bs1.jpg
These days we had a lot of rain, but we were lucky to have a beautiful day yesterday.
bse2.jpg
Orix Buffaloes vs.Tokyo Yakult Swallows.
bse22.jpg

bse3.jpg bse4.jpg
Guests from Sakura Hostel Asakusa, Sakura Hotel Ikebukuro, Sakura Hotel Jimbocho, Sakura Hotel Hatagaya and residents from Sakura House Joined the tour.

I expected that most of the participants would be Americans, but actually 30 participants were people from around the world. Some got passionate about baseball, others were just curious about the game, a few had never seen baseball game before, and some just wanted to have fun.
bse5.jpg bse6.jpg bse7.jpg
They enjoyed bento boxes and beers …

It is good that guests who were strangers to each other become friends.

I accompanied the guests from Sakura Hotel Ikebukuro on the tour and the tour gave me a chance to talk privately with the guests. I was impressed at their unique viewpoints on Japanese cultures and how they see Japanese things differently from the way Japanese do through conversation with them.
bse10.jpg
Mr. Fan (Hong Kong), Mr. Koo (South Korea), Ms. Ho Elaine (Canada), Ms. Amanda (U.S.A.) and Ms. Martina (Germany)

If people are from different countries, it is obvious that they will have a different culture, habits and ways of thinking. The different way of thinking is very stimulating to me and I believe the difference would help me to broaden my horizons.
